Work Location:
You will be based at the Encyclis Rookery South Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), situated in proximity to Stewartby in Bedfordshire. This location is conveniently just a short drive from the M1 Motorway and approximately 20 minutes away from the central area of Milton Keynes.
This remarkable three-line facility commenced operations in January 2022 and possesses the capacity to handle 585,000 tonnes of residual waste on an annual basis, thereby generating sustainable electricity to cater to the energy needs of approximately 112,000 households.

Key Responsibilities:
The Role:
As the Assistant Plant Operator (APO), your primary duty is to execute operational routines and conduct plant inspections to ensure the facility’s safe. Efficient operation while adhering to operational design parameters. The APO will report to the Operations Shift Team Leader and collaborate with the Shift Plant Operator to manage activities. Ensuring compliance with the Environmental Permit and all regulations related to emissions into the air, land, and water.
The role follows a rotating shift schedule as outlined below:
Four days of being on shift, followed by five days of time off.
Five days of being on shift, followed by four days of time off.
Five days of being on shift, followed by twelve days of time off.
Each shift spans 12 hours, encompassing both daytime (6 am – 6 pm) and nighttime (6 pm – 6 am) hours.
key duties and responsibilities for the role:
- Operate the facility safely and efficiently, complying with environmental standards, while working in a rotational shift pattern. This includes tasks like waste feeding, operating cranes, combustion of waste streams, managing steam systems, fans, pumps, steam turbine generators, ash handling, water treatment, and more.
- Actively participate in enhancing the site’s health and safety performance. Involving activities like Planned Preventative Maintenance Systems (PPMS, routine safety inspections, and participation in health and safety meetings.
- Develop, implement, and maintain operational procedures and risk assessments for the facility.
- Report any unsafe health, safety, or environmental conditions, accidents, or incidents to the Shift Team Leader.
- Assist the Shift Team Leader in coordinating and communicating safe working practices for site personnel and contractors.
- Undergo training to operate mobile equipment and overhead cranes safely.
- Perform basic first-line Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) tasks and operational assignments as directed by the Shift Team Leader, and support the maintenance department in routine and non-routine maintenance activities.
- Assist day shift operations with their responsibilities and remain adaptable to the facility’s requirements.
- Take responsibility for maintaining plant cleanliness and upholding high standards of housekeeping.
- Receive deliveries of consumables, and monitor and manage consumable stock levels.
- Adhere to safe operational procedures and risk assessments.
- Contribute to operational improvement processes, corrective actions, defect reporting, and resolution.
- In emergency situations, coordinate with the emergency services and fulfill the role of a Fire Marshal under the direction of the Shift Team Leader.
Education & Experience:
- The ideal educational background is a National Vocational Qualification Level 2 or higher in a technical or science-related subject.
- Other relevant qualifications related to energy recovery or experience in managing large process plants will also be taken into consideration.
- Candidates for this role should possess prior experience in plant operations, process plants, or maintenance, with a preference for practical experience with large boilers and rotating plant equipment.
- Training will be offered in alignment with the facility’s Training Matrix.
