Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, located in Christian County, maintains national cemetery standards to ensure it treats veterans and their families with dignity and respect.
The role of a Veterans Cemetery Caretaker I involves active participation in all burial operations for veterans and eligible family members, along with contributing to special events like Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Wreaths Across America ceremonies, and more. Additionally, this position includes the responsibility of preserving the appearance of the cemetery grounds and gravesites.
KDVA is seeking a dedicated, self-driven, and enthusiastic Veterans Cemetery Caretaker I to join the team at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West. The ideal candidate should possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and motivation to carry out the following tasks:
- Maintain the cemetery grounds, which includes tasks like mowing, weeding, edging, and snow removal.
- Assist with the burial process as needed.
- Conduct equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Ensure the dignity and respect of veterans and their families is upheld at all times.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
- Education: Completion of high school.
- Experience, Training, or Skills: One year of experience in cemetery caretaking, grounds maintenance. Golf course greenskeeping, landscaping, farming, military service, or related fields.
- Substitute Education for Experience: College courses or technical training in horticulture or a related discipline can be considered as a substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Substitute Experience for Education: Not applicable.
- Special Requirements (Age, Licensure, Regulation, etc.): Candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license to be eligible for employment in this role. It is the responsibility of the hiring agency to ensure that the employee possesses and maintains any necessary licensures. Certifications, or credentials for the duration of their employment in this job classification.
Working Environment:
The job involves outdoor work, and the employee will face various weather conditions. Additionally, the role includes operating power equipment and handling pesticides.
Probationary Period:
The employee must complete an initial and promotional probationary period, which lasts for six months. Unless exceptions outlined in accordance with KRS 18A.111 are applicable.
